new to ubuntu; have a few questions

Sorry that I can't really answer any other questions, but as number 4: you
can do this from the command line/terminal easily using sudo <command>. It
will ask you for your password; after you enter it, the command will be
executed as the super user.

If you want to be able to change
things as super user using the graphic interface, run "gksudo
nautilus" from the command line/terminal. A dialog will pop up asking
for your password, then it will open a file manager window with root
privledges. Just be careful! (That command assumes you're using
Ubuntu, which I imagine you are. In Xubuntu, the command would be
"gksudo thunar". In Kubuntu, I believe it would be "gksudo konqueror",
but I'm not sure.)
