No sound recording

I have a similar problem in my laptop. it's a Dell Latitute 120L
I can play sounds but not record them. I've tried all possible combinations of
alsa-mixer parameters already. I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 presently.
any help would be welcome to me as well.
