Giving up on Edgy

Well, in all fairness... I have spent many days & nights simply
upgrading multiple machines from Win98 or WinME to Win2KP, so
upgrading/installing any OS can have it's problems.

Unfortunately Edgy was a near disaster for me. And apparently for many
others according to the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter, Issue 21 Edgy reviews
section (see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Issue21 -
Ubuntu 6.10 reviews from around the web).

That said; I very much like the overall Ubuntu philosophy and community
and doubt that I will switch any time soon. I'll certainly do more
testing with alternate distros on my test machines, but I'm hoping that
the Edgy problems will eventually be resolved.[1]

Well... Larry Ellison/Oracle claims to be on the path to an "unbreakable
"(Redhat based) linux distro, but I wouldn't be on that any time soon.

Anyway, if you were somewhat happy with Breezy, then I'd still recommend
going with Dapper. Dapper has been solid for me (with the exception of
the upgrade fiasco w/X11, and the ubuntu-desktop OpenOffice bundle -
MS/IE embed style nonsense) and I am installing 7 additional systems
this week. So my vote (at this time) is still with Ubuntu.


[1] Disclaimer: I have Dapper running (very well thank you) on some
rather ancient systems; 300Mhz, 450Mhz, 800Mhz etc. I also maintain &
support multiple customer Windows installations of Win2KP/XP - 1.2G -
3.2G including Win2K servers. I gave up using Windows on my own personal
machines due to Ubuntu, and only dual boot to Windows to work on
customer specific MS problems.
