Switching to Gnome from KDE

Kate runs fine under Gnome - I use it all the time.  Ubuntu has done an
excellent job allowing KDE programs to run under Gnome.  e.g. Kate,
K3b, etc.  O.K. your Kate problem is solved - what's next?
