Adding RAM

As my 1.2 AMD Duron box with 512MB (256 * 2) of RAM seemed overworked
with both Gnome and KDE apps open, I swapped the RAM to 1 GB (512 *
2). Now, the machine seems even slower. Anything that I must do when
changing RAM? Should I reinstall (K)ubuntu? Thanks.
