I was more responding to the other poster who said evolution didn't use
mbox.  You didn't say what folder in evolution your mail was in, but if
it was in your Inbox folder, and you got a file not found error with
this command (as the user who's mail was lost, not as root or some other
user):

$ file ~/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox

then you will have to restore from backup, because the file is gone.
