Software to play around with composing music?

I had problems getting rosegarden4 to run so for now I'm running
rosegarden2.  It looks interesting.  (Too bad about my lack of
talent.)

So far I've figured out how to save the score to a MIDI file and play
it through timidity.  If you happen to know how to "pipe" rosegarden
straight through timidity, please let me know.  (If not, I'll
eventually figure it out.
