I don't think that's true... I'm using Edgy and have disabled usplash
but I _can_ see all the kernel log messages, plus all the services
being loaded (like restricted modules, keyboard layout, font, CUPS,
GDM, etc.).

Make sure you have removed the "silent" or "quiet" options from the
kernel command-line.
