I can't address your problem, but I can suggest a workaround:  use
Audacity to convert a few mp3's to ogg vorbis format, and see if the
problem persists.  If it does not, convert to ogg vorbis.  Lots of
advantages not least of which is it sounds better.  

Your problem sounds way serious.  I've never encountered anything like
that, and I download mp3s by the gigabyte.
