There is a utility for the gnome panel  which shows you how much your CPU
clock has been slowed down by -  I forget the name but it's something like
CPU multiplier.

I have also noticed that the little fan in the back has been running

What kind of CPU does your Sony have - Centrino? Also, are you running Edgy
or Dapper?
What's the output from /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/power
