Edgy mplayer binary doesn't do mp3 anymore?

I upgraded from Dapper to Edgy a few days ago. Since that time I mplayer has
been throwing up an error message whenever I start up a video file:

"Requested audio codec family [mp3] (afm=mp3lib) not available. Enable it at
compilation."

mplayer works OK. (I don't know if the video files use mp3 for audio or not,
but sound works OK.)
Audio programs such as Xmms, RhythmBox, VLC, Amarok, etc play mp3 files just
fine. Lame is installed.

Is anyone else getting this error? IS there any reason why mplayer would be
telling me to compile my own binary. I thought the binary from the
repository was supposed to come with mp3 support?
