shutdown at login

Hi,
I use Ubuntu and decided to see what the kde desktop looked like. So,
i used aptitude to install kubuntu-desktop and some other kde package
(something like kde).
So that installed fine. So I logout so I can log back in as kde, that works ok.
I then run celestia, and I got a series of vertical lines on the
screen (I think thats an X error - but I got this error with ubuntu
too). So I do a hard shutdown, restart.
When I get to the login screen, after around 5 seconds, it went into
shutdown. Even if i type in my username and password really fast and
it starts loading, it will then stop that and start to shutdown.
I can use knoppix to acess my files - I think its fixable, I just have
no idea how!
Any help appreciated :)
