I second that! I'm pretty familiar (now) with the reconfigure, but
sometimes I get sidetracked and accept a default when I shouldn't - it
likes to configure my older Fujitsu english version keyboard as Japanese...

Easiest, and fastest way is as you've suggested (but create a backup first):

sudo cp -p /etc/X11/xorg.cong /etc/X11/xorg_backup
gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

then manually put in the proper monitor and H&V sync rates & do a hard
reboot (power down then restart) or restart X. Note: I prefer to do a
hard reboot as then I'm sure that the changes have stuck and will be
available next time I boot back up... yes I know they should/will, but
just like to be sure :-)
