live CD 7.04 - how to save settings between sessions?

It does not appear to work. I am using 7.04 beta and I followed the
instructions to the letter, but nothing is written on the USB stick,
it's just the same empty Ext3 filesystem, and persistence is not
achieved.

Anyone using 7.04 beta with live CD persistence enabled?
