AMD 64 Dual Core only using one Core (was Re: Going from i386 AMD 64 Dual Core)

I am fairly sure my AMD 64 Dual Core processor is only using one of the cores.

When I press 1 in top to cycle through processors I get Cpu(s) and
Cpu0 but no Cpu1.

I am not sure how gkrellm is supposed to display 2 cores but I cant
see any indication of it.

I am using the i generic, not amd64 distribution because I want to use
w32codecs etc.

Do I have to use the amd64 distribution to use both cores?
