If you are able to get an internet connection through your iMac modem,
you can set it up to route the connection to its Ethernet and wireless
ports to share its connection among your laptops and/or your Ubuntu PC
(assuming the PC has a network card). For some basic instructions,
choose "Help" from the Mac's finder, and type "Sharing your internet
connection" and read the topic by that name.

As for getting the Ubuntu modem working directly, I think you need to
join forces -- look for a local linux group and attend their next
meeting. There will almost certainly be someone there who will have
everything you need and you can probably trade something you already
have for a working modem. Another person's setup will make it much
easier to rule out obscure hardware problems. (Maybe your
motherboard's BIOS needs an update, or something even more obscure.)

There are several ways to locate a local group -- one way is through
the Ubuntu forums. You may have a "LoCo" group in your area. But many
groups are independent of a particular distro, so a few Google
searches starting with "linux" plus your city, county, country, etc.
may point you to one.

Thanks for keeping us informed!
