To me there seems to be a problem with modules loaded from the initrd.
Check your /boot/grub/menu.lst if the initrd entry for your
2.6.17-11-generic kernel points to the right file. Furthermore, check the
kernel entry if the root device points to /dev/sda<?>. OTOH maybe the
2.6.17-11-generic kernel could really read it as /dev/hda<?> and it now
points to /dev/sda<?> after the update?
But with your new 2.6.20-14-generic kernel I have no idea what to do.
