Update Manager Configuration

How can I prevent Update Manager from checking one application for updates?
I have an application I upgraded for the application website but update
manager keeps checking it for update. I recently did an automated
upgrade and it overwrote the application with the obsolete version in
the repositories. If the version in the repositories were to be updated,
it might happen again. I want to prevent that.
I know I can uninstall and reinstall but I don't want to do that, as I'm
afraid I'll lose my data and configuration.
It seems there must be a text file somewhere with the list of packages
in it which could simply be edited.
