removing item from panel

How do I remove the network-manager from the panel?  Right-clicking
doesn't offer the options that other icons do. The panel has an "add to
panel" option, but seemingly not a "remove from panel" option. And you
can't drag it off the panel.

Is the only way to remove the package from the entire system?
