It is a known bug in Gnome that it cannot deal with concurrent login
sessions of the same user, and sometimes quite spectacularly messing
up~/.gnome2 (or gconf, I forgot). I would not be surprised if what you
are seeing (disabling concurrent logins for all session types from gdm)
was a raw temporary workaround.
