More gnome power manager confusion

Because gnome-power-manager is causing problems in KDE and I'm unable to
stop it loading when someone log in to KDE (see other thread), I decided
to remove it. However, while I can live with it removing ubuntu-desktop,
it also removes gnome-session, which I can't live without.
I now have a catch-22 where the system is no use with gnome-power-
manager installed, since it makes KDE unusable, but if I remove it, it
takes gnome-session with it and renders gnome unusable.
If it were possible to stop gnome-power-manager from loading in KDE,
then the problem is solved, but it has no preference available to stop
it launching.
Any ideas?
