Edgy 2.6.10 taking tens of minutes to boot up

Thank you everyone for your replies which have given me really useful places to look. Unfortunately this will be in the future once I've got my post-holiday jobs out of the way (I've got it up and running and useable).
BTW, the holiday wasn't a software package; it was a week pootling gently down the North and South Oxford canals on a narrowboat and then all the way back up again - heaven!
