No driver support for ipw3945

I have a Toshiba A-100 laptop with ipw3945 wireless network card

I need help getting this thing to work. The default install for i386 works
barely to get online, but there is a problem with the driver and the entire
system becomes sporadic with freezes every 2 or 3 seconds. When checking
output there are errors generated by the ipw3945 driver intermittently and
the system is unusable. If anyone else has this ipw3945 networking card
working under Ubuntu please let me know how you got it working. Links?
documentation? anything that could be of use.
