The ubuntu desktop editions are for desktop computers (that also
includes laptops). They provide some networking features (just enough to
connect to servers), word processing, gaming, internet, email, etc.

It just depends what version you get. The server edition will probably
have tons more network drivers then what the desktop editions would
(dont quote me on this one).

Kubuntu is much more nicer looking then gnome (KDE is for linux noobs in
my opinion)
