you should notice that even though the box that should display the
screen says Disconnected (or something very similar) that if you click
it to connect it tells you why it can't connect.

I suspect like me you didn't install x11vnc in the Thin client
environment.

However your best bet is to ask on the edubuntu mailing lists or
edubuntu irc channel.
