question - how to change default movie player

  Hello,
 
I have a questions, I am running Ubuntu 6.10 and I would like to have 
vlc to be my default movie player instead of totem.  Can someone tell me 
how to change that, or because Ubuntu standards have totem as the 
default player I should not make such a change?

The issue is that I have never been able to get totem to play all the 
video formats that vlc can.  So I would like to have vlc to be the 
default player when I click on a video file.
