sudo passwd root

Assign a password to root,

Login as root when your done and go nuts.  If GDM doesn't allow you log 
in as root, prest Ctl-Alt-F1 go switch to console and log in. Type 
startx -- :1 command to launch x from command prompt. Sorry, I can't 
examine the GDM config file on the the computer I'm writing from.
