ipw2200 wireless card not detected after edgy install with wifi turned off

I just installed edgy and when I did it I had turned off the wireless
card (ipw2200). Now, the wireless card doesn't show up even if I
modprobe ipw2200.

If I boot with the live cd everything works and I had this working
without problem since dapper.

Any idea how to force the hardware detection? I don't want to
reinstall everything just because of this.
