nv (nVidia) graphics and OpenGL

Hardware: TNT2 Model 64
Driver: Ubuntu 'nv' driver and "-legacy" packages

My attempts to enable GL support cause the following in my Xorg.log showing:

I figure it's some bad combination of components that don't play nice 
together, but I'm at a loss to figure a winning combination.

Any assistance would be most welcome,
