As for why it isn't in the base system, that's simple.  Servers don't belong
on a base desktop system :-)  You need to know what you're doing when you
install any server, so they're generally left to the user to install.  The
average desktop user doesn't need sshd running.  Of course the average
linux geek can't get by without it :-)

Why isn't it in "Add/Remove Applications"?  That's a mystery :-(   I suppose
there are plenty of apps there, that people install all the time, and of
course we never hear about those.  We hear about the things that are
missing, though.
