System get no response while running amule/mldonkey in Ubuntu 7.10

Try starting aMule from the command line in a terminal window. It will
indicate what it is doing while it starts up and may give you some
clues as to what is happening.

Also, have you defined any share directories yet? When either of these
programs start up, they generate hashes for files they haven't seen
before; this can take a while depending on the number and size of your
files and your the speed of your CPU, but this should happen in the
background and your system should remain responsive.
