Samba - slow copies

I'm having a bit of a problem with copying files from one Ubuntu to
another (both Gutsy - 2.6.22-14-386 kernels). The problem is that when I
copy a large file from this system to a laptop (fresh install + all
updates) the copy is extremly slow... about 9 minutes to copy a 210Mb
file. Copying the same file (even at the same time) to another Gutsy
desktop takes only about 1 minute.
I've checked the NIC speed using mii-tool in the laptop (PCMCIA Netgear
FA410TX) and it is set and working at 100baseTx-FD. Checking on the
Netgear sit, NG says to install the tulip driver:
<http://kbserver.netgear.com/inquira/default.asp?ui_mode=answer&prior_transaction_id=259122&action_code=5&highlight_info=16777917,9,17&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fkbserver.netgear.com%2Fkb_web_files%2Fn100173.asp&answer_id=29222386#__highlight>
So I install the tulip driver & the Samba xfer is still slow.
I pop in a USB Airlink 101 (wired) 100MB adaptor and the copy takes
about 6 minutes.
If I plug the same )pcmcia Netgear FA410TX and Airlink 101 USB) into a
350Mhz/384Mb laptop (yes there are still such things around), the file
transfer takes takes the same.
Any ideas on what might be causing this, and/or what I can try to tune
to speed things up?
