You'd be amazed at what a difference lighter window manager can make.
My machine is pretty quick with KDE, but, I also have
jwm (you can apt-get it) installed, and, dude...no comparison.
Everything is like *instant*.
Gnome and KDE have both gotten fattern' Aunty Mildred.
Xfce (ie. xubuntu) is a bit quicker.
Another apt-able option, considerably more configurable and pretty than
jwm, but lighter than even xfce would be blackbox or fluxbox (ie. 
fluxbuntu).
I mean, if you've maxed out the ram and cpu capacity of the machine and it's
still feeling as sluggish as Mildred's overfed weiner dog, losing some 
weight
in the wm department couldn't hurt.
