nm-applet not showing up in panel?

hi,

after a long stretch of perfect wireless networking, i'm having troubles
with nm-applet.  for some reason, its icon no longer shows up on my
gnome-panel!  this is true even though it's definitely running -- in
fact, sometimes it's running twice:

> $ ps aux | grep nm
> matt      6635  0.0  1.1  62868 11800 ?        S    Dec21   0:00 nm-applet --sm-config-prefix /nm-applet-2A5oGZ/ --sm-client-id 117f000001000119795235600000059840004 --screen 0

i don't know what the deal is, but has anyone seen anythingl ike this?
or have any ideas how to do a further diagnosis?  thanks m uch,
