As I read it this is largely a 3Com issue, and not isolated to Ubuntu.
My "ideal solution" would be to replace the NIC with something not 3Com
of you can, mostly because NICs are just that cheap. I did see some
discussion about a kernel patch, but I doubt it's worth messing with
custom kernels that will have to be re-patched and recompiled every
update, unless you're *deeply* in love with your network monitor. ;)
As far as Google goes, try "pci_set_power_state() syslog" minus the
quotes. There's also this very short thread with a couple links in it...
