Changing ip from dhcp to static freezes

I did an initial installation with dhcp cause it was easier, and I'd
fix it later when I had the info I needed for static.

Think my problem is related to configuring nis and nfs before I
remembered to setup the static ip address. But I could be barking up
the wrong tree. It may be some other change I've forgotten.

Anyway when I change to static ip using the gui at

   System -> Administration -> Networking

the system freezes before the change takes effect.

The system configuration text files aren't where I used to looking for them.
Need to go look at another box with static ip configured and hunt around in /etc
