LOL (OK, it's only funny because _you_ did it :-) ).  Iirc, I actually used
the -v option, and saw what was happening fairly quickly - or else it just
took much longer than expected.  So I killed it before doing anything
_that_ serious, and I happened to have another version of the distro I was
using at the time on another partition, so was able to quickly copy files
over from there without losing _too_ much.

These days, with a live CD always at hand, recovery from many of these
errors is a lot simpler - but it's still always better to try not to do
them at all :-)
