Ubuntu causing a "CPU Fan Failed" problem on restart

Well... Then indeed probably something to do with the kernel and maybe 
the APM or ACPI configuration. Have you tried playing with settings of 
the kernel regarding ACPI in /boot/grub/menu.lst ?
