I am not Linux illiterate, I have used Mandrake 8.2 and 9.1 for about three 
years on my old box.  In Mandrake you just add the root to the list of login 
users in the control panel. Root would show up on login then.  I take it 
that Ubuntu doesn't have this feature?

I rarely used this feature.  Command line has always been my friend.  Much 
faster too.  Or so it always was for me than trying to change users.
