odd apt behavior

Maybe you don't have the "multiverse" repository enabled in your laptop?
sun-java is in multiverse, and I think that repo it's not enabled by
default.

Take a look at /etc/apt/sources.lst in both machines, and see if there
is any difference.

You may have to enable the multiverse repository and do an "apt-get
update" after that.
