It is the numeric number which corresponds to a username or login in.
Here is my entry in my notebook's /etc/passwd file:

smoot:x:268:1000:Smoot Carl-Mitchell,,,:/home/smoot:/usr/bin/tcsh

My username is smoot and my uid is 268.  The format of this file is explained in:

man 5 passwd
