Problems with cups and printing

Folks,

Within the past two days, cups appears to have flown south. It fails to
recognize my HP 6540 anymore. All is properly plugged in. But while I
can delete the printer from gnome-cups-manager, I can't set it up
again. The program just hangs. I've looked at error-log
in /var/log/cups, and find it's giving me an extraordinarily long
string of the following:

cupsAddCert: Unable to create certification file /var/run.cups/certs/0
- Too many open files
Unable to accept client connection -- Too many open files

How can I remedy this? At the moment, no files are open or in the print
queue.
