Looks like my dusty souvenirs were just that... dusty, in that the idea
is not to use a USB key to store just personal settings, but to put the
whole Live CD on to the key. That requires a 1GB key of course, but
these days, even 1GB is quite cheap, 15 Euros or so IIRC.
So it's probably quite interesting for the OP to consider going this
route, especially as performance/speed is likely to be better than when
running from the CD.
