But if I enabled composite and then restart the x server I cannot get 3d 
acceleration. I think the driver does not support it, but maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think this can be a problem, except for reading the xorg.conf file, 
and I've checked my configuration is using the ati driver-settings.
However, if you provide me some information about reconfiguration I'll try it.
