Dealing with Switzerland keyboard

So I got a replacement Thinkpad T23 laptop keyboard for my Thinkpad T21,
and when it arrived it turned out to be a Swiss keyboard. At least I
think thats what it is, and thats what GNOME detects it as. The Y and Z
have swapped places, there are various accent keys with 4 or 5 different
characters on them where things like ;[:{ are on a UK keyboard, etc.
At first I tried to get used to the layout, but theres no exclamation
mark, theres an @ underneath the 2 that I cant see how to use, etc. So
in GNOME keyboard prefs I just set the layout to UK. This worked fine
except for one key, the key that should now do a tick mark, and that has
four letter a characters with different hats and a { drawn on it. This
key does nothing if I press it once, if I tap it twice it does this ยด,
and if I tap it then another key in quick succession I sometimes get a
character with a hat over it.
Is there anything I can do to make this key behave like a normal UK tick
key?
Thanks
