2.6.17 kernel, EVMS, can't mount /home and /var.

As part of the upgrade from Edgy to Feisty, my kernel went from
linux-image-2.6.17-11-generic version 2.6.17.1-11.38 to
linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic version 2.6.20-16.29. Unfortunately, I
can no longer boot the computer in the old kernel --- the boot-up
stops at "Starting Enterprise Volume Management System"; if I press
Ctl-Alt-Del it continues but fails to mount /home and /var, so nothing
useful works.

I'm not happy with the 2.6.20 kernel because of the bug [1] that
prevents SMART from working with my SATA drive.

Is there any work-around to let me revert to the 2.6.17 kernel? (I've
had EVMS on my system for a while, so I don't know why it *now*
refuses to work with that kernel.)

Any other recommendations?

Thanks,
Adam
