What the are you talking about, of course it saves bandwidth.  A simple
text email consisting of 100 characters turns into over 400 + the
original 100.  My math says, that is 5 times bigger, multiplied by
however many thousands are on the email list and you end up with an
incredible waste of bandwidth.

html mail = bad plain and simple
