With regard to Amarok...

If you're not already running KDE (in addition to GNOME) and A) prefer a
more consistent GNOME look and feel and B) don't want to install all the
additional KDE dependencies (library files) that will be required for
Amarok (I think you end up with over 100MB of downloads for a program
that itself is only 30MB), I'd suggest you take a look at Exaile.  It's
a fairly recent program. In a nutshell it's a GTK (GNOME) clone of
Amarok. I've played with it and I was impressed.

	$ sudo apt-get install exaile

Myself I prefer Amarok, but I also run both GNOME and KDE and prefer to
stick with one program for my music playing needs. :)

BTW, Amarok and Exaile do not rip. For just ripping, I'd suggest taking
a look at Sound Juicer (installed by default in Ubuntu) or Grip for
ripping in GNOME.  I like KDE's kaudiocreator myself.

Another GNOME program, Banshee, does in fact, also rip as well as play.
 While not the best description, I'd call it a cross between Exaile and
Rhythmbox (I prefer Eaile in this instance - despite the fact that it
doesn't rip).

	$ sudo apt-get install banshee banshee-official-plugins
