Hi,
this tends to be a very interesting project, no matter which groupware solution
will be prefered. As James stated, there are several competitiors where some of
them are backed by a commercial company. This project should imho select a
modular solution which can be extended and the user has the freedom to chose his
prefered solution not depending on its components. This may imply a full
featured plugin host for example where the user can configure for his own which
type of setup he wants to use. Such integration capabilities are extremely
important if somebody wants to migrate to this solution.
I think Open-Xchange is able to give this project a big boost because we are
planing to release a out-of-the-box solution (Open-Xchange Express Edition)
which comes with all needed components using the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS stack. This
will be distributed via a Ubuntu CD which holds all depending packages and
configures the system for immediate usage. Such a installation/configuration
takes about 15 minutes on a bare-metal machine. After installation, the user has
access to a web-based configuration interface as well as a impressive user
interface. Those web interfaces are using "Ajax" technology and can be
customized to the needs of this project (e.g. branding, themes...). Besides
this, the application provides a full http api as well as webdav which allows to
integrate plugins and client software. As the code evolves, this plugin
functionality will spread through the whole application. This product is
currently in public beta, but seats are limited. In short term, all components
will be published under the gpl/creativecommons license.
Information about this software and interface specification can be obtained from
the wiki and the forums:
