To say you don't need a virus scanner is a bit naïve.
Watch all of the high level security companies and see that all OS's are
patching these days not just Microsoft.  With more people trying out *nix
shells in the wild there are more areas open for exposure.  I have all
flavors of OS's here at my shop now and all are port scanned and probed
daily by little pests on the Internet.

You are having the piss taken out of you.  The M$ OS is a good virus trap.
You 
don't actually NEED an anti-virus app on Ubuntu but if you want one try
ClamAV.
It comes highly recommended by others.
